It’s a fairly rare event , but there is an English castle for sale – Ruperra Castle. Ruperra Castle is for sale at £1.5 million , the BBC has reported . England has a large number of medieval castles , mainly built by the Normans to protect the land of the lord of the manor . The design for Ruperra Castle was clearly based on that for Lulworth Castle, just 100 miles away in Dorset, and built between 1603-05. Always called a ‘castle’ but built with the instruction from Lord Howard of Bindon that it ‘prove pretty’, it was never military. Indeed, Thomas Gerard writing in 1630 described it as ‘well seated for prospect and pleasure; but of little other use’. Bought by the Weld family from Lord Howard it remained their family seat until a devastating fire in 1929 completely gutted the interior – as it remains today, although the building itself has been restored. Another house thought to have been built around 1612 is Compton Bassett House in Wiltshire (dem. c1929) which clearly shared a similar layout although the corner turrents were square. Thomas Morgan built the castle .

The builder of Ruperra Castle was Thomas Morgan (b.1564 – d.1632), who made his fortune as the Steward for the Earls of Pembroke at Wilton House, Wiltshire.

Castle is an enlightening look at the origins, development and decline of castles in Britain. A real castle is a fortress and a stately home all rolled into one. This is part of what makes these extraordinary structures so fascinating – they are a product of two contradictory impulses – to be warlike and homely at the same time.

From the Tower of London to Ireland’s Giant Causeway, the range of World Heritage sites to visit in UK regions of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland will enthral. In a land rich in history, culture, pomp and stunning beauty you’ll need to extend your holidays to discover even a fraction of the World Heritage treasures throughout the UK.Built in the 11th century to help quell the wild northern population, Durham Castle was the seat of the Bishop of Durham, and King William the Conqueror’s authority in the region. A magnificent example of Norman architecture, largely softened by ivy covered walls and formal gardens; the castle is now used as a college. A guided tour will escort you through the beautifully maintained 14 metre high and 30-metre long Great Hall, once the largest in Great Britain, and the Norman Chapel displaying unique Norman sculptures. The castle grounds also incorporate the visually dramatic Durham Cathedral, burial site of three saints. Occasionally a castle comes up for sale in England . Visit the castles for sale site for more information
